Poland's KNF says its CFD review is still open

The Polish regulator has not given a timetable for its review of how CFDs are offered, following a penalty on XTB earlier this year.

Poland's Financial Supervision Authority (KNF) said on 17 August 2026 that its review of how contracts for difference are offered is still under way, according to Finance Magnates, which reported on 18 August 2026.

What was announced

A KNF spokesperson indicated that work continues and that conclusions will be reported when it is complete. The regulator has not published a timetable, a consultation paper, a draft rule or any possible measures, according to the article.

The report says KNF's chairman first described the review in May. It covers how domestic and cross-border firms offer CFDs, including how they test clients' knowledge, experience and understanding of risk. The chairman has said that access to complex, high-risk instruments is too easy and should be limited for people who do not understand the risks. The article cites Polish press reports that restrictions along the lines of those used in Spain are among the options being looked at, though KNF has not said it will adopt them.

The article also recalls that in March KNF imposed a penalty of PLN 20 million on XTB over CFD marketing and client-assessment practices, covering parts of 2022 and 2023. KNF cited weaknesses in knowledge assessments, target-market controls and risk disclosures, and objected to a list highlighting high-performing clients. XTB has asked for reconsideration, so the penalty is not final.

Why it matters for traders

A review without a deadline leaves open what will change. If rules do follow, they could affect onboarding questionnaires, advertising and which clients can access leveraged products. Because the process is at an early stage, readers should not assume any particular outcome.

What to check

  • How a broker assesses your experience before it opens a CFD account.
  • Whether marketing highlights profits without equal prominence for losses.
  • Notices from your own regulator on product restrictions or reviews.
